It is an example of the superfluous man novel, noted for its compelling Byronic hero Pechorin and for the beautiful descriptions of the Caucasus. A Hero of Our Time, novel by Mikhail Lermontov, published in Russian in 1840 as Geroy nashego vremeni. Its psychologically probing portrait of a disillusioned 19th-century aristocrat and its use of a nonchronological and fragmented narrative structure influenced Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Leo Tolstoy, and other major writers of Russian literature. This is a curious tale that travels through different voices and stories before opening up a channel to the eponymous hero. It is a sort of Bildungsroman in reverse, that leaves the reader feeling whiplashed by a sense of going through a revolving door but never fUlL.y emerging on the other side. Lermontov coins his critique of 19th century Russia through Pechorin, his anti-hero, by depicting what he calls in the Preface 'the vices of our whole generation in their ultimate development'. The
